Biodiesel blends

Fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs), known as biodiesels, are products of plant or animal origin, whose composition and properties are established in the international standard EN 14214 (except for the maximum iodine content, which is governed by EN 140).

Under EN 590, the standard governing diesel, for which all vehicles are guaranteed, conventional diesel can contain up to 5% per volume of biodiesel. This biodiesel, regulated in Spain under Royal Decree 61/2006, has to meet quality specification EN 14214.

At the same time, Directive 2003/30EC states that fuels containing over 5% biodiesel—which therefore do not comply with EN 590—must be clearly labelled at points of sale.
