Biodiesel is a fuel made from plants which is used as a substitute for diesel in the motor industry. It is made out of renewable raw materials: either oil-bearing plants (rape, sunflower, palm, etc.) or used vegetable oil. In the latter case, not only does the process make use of the waste product, it also prevents it from being dumped, and thereby prevents contamination of underground, river and sea water.
Different blends of biodiesel and regular diesel are assigned a classification consisting of the letter “B”, followed by the percentage of biodiesel in the product. generally speaking, any diesel vehicle can run on any of these blends, or even using pure biodiesel.
Most cars require no technical alterations to operate with biofuel, especially in low blends such as b12, b15 and b20.
In any case, the Ente Vasco de la Energía (EVE) recommends that potential users of biodiesel should check with the manufacturer regarding conditions of use. |
